Here are some of the places that you might want to go and visit…

Sligo Abbey – In the town centre, this abbey has stood here for centuries – since the 13th Century to be exact. Unfortunately, parts of the abbey were destroyed in 1414 when a candle that was left unattended caused a fire. Despite this, much of the abbey remains from before the fire, and visitors can see beautiful sculptures and carvings. It is said that the original bell from the abbey was salvaged and thrown into Lough Gill nearby.

Sligo Museum – This is a great place to get to know the local area. There are lots of artefacts that were found locally dating back to the stone age, as well as many items from the famous local poet William Butler Yeats, including poems and letters. Local art can also be found here and admission to the museum is free.
