Staying in Kyoto economically is not complicated. The old Japanese capital is a very expensive city to find accommodation if you travel in high season, that is, during the hanami or in autumn. Even so, as in all of Japan, you can find accommodation for all budgets. Of course, if you have a small budget will surely touch you away from the center a little. If so, do not worry, since to visit Kyoto you will have to pull public transport.
In this post we tell you the best areas and hotels to stay in Kyoto. In addition, we leave you 40 things to do in the city so you can enjoy its unique temples.
Where to stay in Kyoto?
1. Gion and Higashiyama district, the best place to sleep in Kyoto
If you want comfort and value being central and close to most attractions, this will be your area. The district of Gion is famous for the existence of Geishas, although during the night it adopts a magical atmosphere. There you will find many options where to eat and go out for a drink. The best thing is that you will feel in Japan 700 years ago. The district conserves very well the traditional Japanese architecture and it is a luxury to spend hours and hours in its streets.
Regarding the price, it is the most expensive area to stay in Kyoto. If you can not stay in the heart of Gion, try to do so throughout the Higashiyama district, where some of the most famous temples in the city are located. For you to have a reference, in high season it is almost impossible to find something below € 100 per night. On the other hand, during the rest of the year, you can find interesting things for around € 70 per night. Without a doubt, the best place to stay in Kyoto.
2. Staying in the Shimogyo district, a comfortable alternative
If what you prioritize is being near the train station, stay in the Shimogyo district. If you take the Japan Rail Pass and move around Japan by train, you will probably be interested in having the hotel near the station. Besides being well connected by public transport, you will be quite close to the main attractions of Kyoto. The district is quite quiet and more economical than the previous one.
It was where we stayed and we did not regret it. For you to have a reference of the price, outside of high season you can find decent hotels from € 50 per night, and in high season, as in our case, for € 80. Without doubt, one of the best areas to stay in Kyoto.
Recommended hotels in Shimogyo:
- Hotel Sunroute Kyoto
- Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Ekimae
- Japaning Hotel Briller Kyoto
3. Nakagyo District, one of the best places to stay in Kyoto
If you are looking for something cheaper, in Nakagyo you can find many things. To give you an idea of the price, for less than € 100 you will find interesting hotels. It should also be noted that it is a great area to sleep in Kyoto.
Nakagyo is considered the center of the city. Basically the district is focused on tourism, commerce and entertainment and has many attractions such as Nijō Castle or the lively Nishiki Market. It is a well-communicated area, with different seasons. In less than half an hour by public transport you will get to the farthest monument. If you prefer to walk, until the famous neighborhood of Gion you will only have 30 minutes.
Some recommended places in Nakagyo:
- Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo
- Japaning Hotel Modany Kyoto Enmachi

4. Minami district, away from tourism
As its translation in Japanese indicates, minami means south. This district is located just below Kyoto’s central station. It is not a particularly economical area to stay in Kyoto, in part, because there is not so much offer. It is quite complicated to find something below € 100 per night.
In general, Minami is a working class district. As a curiosity, it has a large population of Korean citizens. It is an unattractive area for tourists: instead of monuments and restaurants, industrial buildings and simple residential areas predominate. The spectacular To-ji temple is the only exception. If you find a good hotel north of the neighborhood, you will be in a privileged location. Central and well connected.
Good accommodations in Minami:
- Ibis Styles Kyoto Station
- The Kyoto Inn
- New Miyako Hotel
5. Stay in the district of Kamigyo, a noble area
Finally, Kamigyo is one of the most interesting places to stay in Kyoto. It has a lot of hotel offerings, so you’ll find everything. Previously, the area was a district of residences of the royalty and the upper classes in the old Japanese capital . At present, it is a quite tourist area and with many universities.
However, it is known worldwide for hosting the imposing Imperial Palace in Kyoto. At night it is a quiet area, but at the same time with an interesting nightlife. Regarding the price, you will find many inexpensive Japanese-style hostels and rooms for around € 40. If you want to stay in a hotel, you will find them from € 60.
Recommended accommodations in Kamigyo:
- FALDIC Inn
- Kyoto Uraraka Guesthouse

Finally, you stay where you stay, we recommend you to take out travel insurance before traveling to Japan. If you need healthcare you will have attention in Spanish and will not advance a yen in doctors. You can take out insurance to spend two weeks in Japan starting at only € 50.
